DarknStormy

Dark’ N’ Stormy is a very popular drink in the United States. The unexpected combination between dark rum and ginger beer make it perfect for the summer. Even though Americans highly appreciate this cocktail, its origins are believed to be in Bermuda. As it is the case with numerous alcoholic drinks, no one can tell for sure nowadays who exactly invented them. Dark’ N’ Stormy is believed to have been invented by American sailors. They named it thinking about the numerous dark and stormy nights that they have spent on the ships. The name is very well-chosen because the use of dark rum gives a particular dark color to the cocktail.

Initially, Dark’ N’ Stormy only contained dark rum and ginger beer. Nowadays, it is usually served with lime juice. Most people like it this way, but Bermudans would never add lime juice in their Dark’ N’ Stormy cocktail. It is after all, a matter of personal taste. If you like the refreshing flavor of lime and the way it complements the beer and the rum, you can have it. If you like the classic version better, you can skin the lime.

The ratio between the rum and the beer is of uttermost importance when making this cocktail. If you don’t find that perfect balance between these two ingredients, you’ll never know how a veritable Dark’ N’ Stormy tastes like. Experts consider that the perfect ration between rum and beer is 2:3 or 2:4. However, nothing stops you from experimenting. You can play with the proportions and see what comes out. When you find that perfect combination for you, keep it in mind and replicate it. However, start from the original recipe and go from there if you want to experiment.
