This is a cocktail with one of the most provocative names you can find. The drink is just as intriguing as the name and it is excellent for summer afternoons or summer nights. It is basically a combination of vodka and various fruity flavors and it is enjoyed by both men and women alike. It is hard not to like this cocktail because it is refreshing, fruity in taste and perfect to liven up the atmosphere at a beach party.

Since the cocktail is so popular, there is no wonder that there are many variations to it. Sex on the Beach is an IBA official cocktail and the recipe recommended by this association is noted below. It calls for vodka, orange juice, cranberry juice and peach schnapps. However, there is another recipe, recommended by the “Mr. Boston’s Official Bartender’s Guide” which uses vodka, cranberry juice, pineapple juice, Chambord and Midori Melon Liqueur. The famous Hard Rock Café also has its own recipe for the Sex on the Beach. It is based on the recipe from the “Mr. Boston’s Official Bartender’s Guide”, but it also has some extra ingredients: lemon juice and sugar syrup. Numerous variations of the cocktail use both the orange and the pineapple juice.  In certain cultures, the Sex on the Beach is made with coconut rum instead of vodka. As you can imagine, this results in even a fruitier cocktail. Some bartenders are adding a dash of amaretto to this drink in order to enhance the flavors.

Once you learn how to prepare a basic recipe, you can experiment with the variations and see which one you like most.

How to Prepare Sex on the Beach

You need the following ingredients:

  • 1 ½ oz. of vodka.
  • 2 oz. of cranberry juice.
  • 2 oz. of orange juice.
  • ½ oz. of crème de cassis.
  • ¾ oz. of peach schnapps.
  • An orange slice and a maraschino cherry for garnish.

Pour all the ingredients except the orange slice and the maraschino cherry into a shaker filled with ice and shake well. Strain the drink in a highball glass and garnish with the orange slice and the cherry.

This cocktail can also be prepared in a shooter form. All that you need if you want to make it like this is vodka and peach schnapps in equal proportions. You can also add a dash of grenadine for the flavor. In fact, if you live in an area where cranberry juice is not easily available, you can use grenadine instead.

By replacing the vodka in the recipe with Fireball Cinnamon Whiskey you can create a Sex on Fire. On the other hand, by taking the orange juice out of the recipe, you can make the variation known as the "Woo Woo". If you don’t drink alcohol, you can have Safe Sex on the Beach which is the same thing minus the vodka.
