The Lemon Drop Martini recipe originated in the 70s and became very popular among young customers in the 80s. It was invented in a bar in San Francisco which no longer exists. This bar was famous for creating recipes of “girly” cocktails. The drinks were very potent, but their alcoholic taste was reduced by adding sweet and sour ingredients. This is also true in the case of the Lemon Drop Martini. It is vodka based, so it is pretty strong. However, the use of lemon juice and sugar make it refreshing and suitable for ladies. It tastes like lemon drop candies, but has an alcoholic kick that can’t be ignored.

Some Lemon Drop Martini recipes only combine vodka, lemon juice and sugar syrup or superfine sugar. However, others also call for a small amount of triple sec which enhances the aroma of the cocktail. You can enjoy it with or without the triple sec, depending on how you like it better.

The Lemon Drop Martini is very easy to prepare at home if you have all the ingredients and a cocktail shaker.

How to Prepare the Lemon Drop Martini

You need the following ingredients:

  • 1 ½ oz. of vodka.
  • ¾ oz. of fresh lemon juice.
  • 1 tsp. of superfine sugar (it can be replaced with 1 tsp. of sugar syrup).
  • ½ oz. of triple sec.
  • A lemon twist for garnish.

Put all the ingredients except the lime twist in a cocktail shaker with some ice cubes and shake well. Make sure you shake for enough time in order to allow the sugar to dissolve if you are using superfine sugar and not sugar syrup.

Strain the cocktail into a martini glass and garnish with the lemon twist. You can also sugar rim the glass by rubbing its border with a lemon slice and dipping it into sugar.

The quality of the Lemon Drop Martini depends on the vodka you are using, so make sure you buy something with an enjoyable flavor. Also make sure all the ingredients are chilled because there is nothing worse than a warm martini. If you want to make sure it will have the adequate temperature, you can also chill the martini glass.

It is best to use freshly squeezed lemon juice because bottled one does not have the same refreshing taste.

If you are in for something refreshing and delicious, this is one of the recipes that you should try.
