History

A “Cocktail” is a word which is defined as s a potent combination of many ingredients such as spirits, bitters, water and sugar. The word cocktail was first coined at some point in the early 19th century in May 6, 1806 in the issue of The Balance and Columbia Repository in Hudson, New York

The “Old Fashioned” is a specific name often used for a cocktail involving heavy use of Bourbon whiskey during the 80’s by a club at Pendennis, which was also called as a gentleman’s club in Louisville, Kentucky. The recipe had been invented by bartender at the club that was popularized by a member of the same club and also by bourbon distiller. It was brought to Waldorf-Astoria Hotel bar in New York City by Colonel James E. Pepper during the 19th century.

How to make a Classic Old Fashioned Drink

Ingredients and items needed: Sugar, club soda (optional), Angostura bitters, an old fashioned glass, bourbon or rye whiskey and a few ice cubes.

1. To make an old fashioned drink first put half tablespoon of sugar in the old fashioned glass. Add 3-4 dashed of the angostura bitters and after that you must put some water or club soda in the glass to wet it down.

2. With the help of a muddler or any other relevant object crush the sugar till when you could see a lining of the sugar grains and the bitters. After that, pour in the bourbon whiskey or the rye whiskey. Put some ice cubes in the glass and then serve it on the rocks.  Add a a rod whish for stirring if you really want to be fancy.

Garnish to add a kick to an old fashioned drink: Either of a lemon slice, orange slice or maraschino.

 Variations

There are many variations of the drink around the world. One typical modified version of the Old Fashioned makes heavy use of Brandy instead of low-grade whiskey. The modern modified Old Fashioned drinks consists of the original drink mixed with soda water. Sometimes the bartenders use typical sugar syrup which is pre made. The using of these syrups ensures that no sugar is left undisclosed in the drink. If the sugar is still left in the drink then the last sip of that could ruin.

The Old Fashioned drink is an ideal morning drink and the good thing about it is that it is very easy to make it even at home. Only some common ingredients are used to make the drink and it is also very versatile so you won’t be ever bored of it. Why have plain whiskeys when you can have even a better version of it? The simplicity of the Old Fashioned makes it very special and ideal for spirit celebrations.
