The French Connection is a simple mixed drink with only two ingredients. Despite its simplicity, it has an amazing aroma and it is perfect to be served after dinner. The drink is served chilled, but the cognac in it brings on specific warmth. There are several variations of this cocktail and they are all enjoyable. However, the original one containing cognac and amaretto remains the most popular one.
Those who like the unique taste of cognac would definitely enjoy a French Connection. The flavor of the cognac blends with the one of amaretto and creates a stunning result. Cognac is actually a type of brandy named after a town in France. However, not all brandies can be called cognac. They have to meet certain requirements in order to be given this name. Cognac is only made of certain types of grapes, it is doubled distilled and left to mature in oak barrels. Since there are only two ingredients in this cocktail, it makes perfect sense to assume that the overall quality of the cocktail is influenced by the quality of the ingredients. You won’t regret spending some extra money on a very good cognac and amaretto.
The French Connection Recipe
In order for this drink to be balanced, you need to use cognac and amaretto in equal shares. The original recipe requires for 35 ml of each. However, some people reduce the amaretto content and add more cognac while others like the sweetness of amaretto and the almond flavor and use more of it.
The French Connection looks best if it is served in an old-fashioned glass. Fill the glass with ice cubes and pour the ingredients over the ice. Stir them and enjoy.
As you can see, this cocktail is very easy to make. It is incredibly savory and complex in its simplicity.
The French Connection No.2
This is a variation of the original recipe which uses Grand Marnier instead of amaretto. This is an orange flavored liqueur with a brandy base, so you can expect for this version of the French Connection to be pretty strong flavored. It is usually served in a brandy snifter, but considering its strength, some people also add some ice cubes.
The French Connection Coffee
This is one of the most impressive variations of the French Connection. Since brandy goes well with coffee, the result is truly amazing. You can prepare it just like the original recipe, but in an Irish coffee glass. After pouring the amaretto and the cognac, also add some hot coffee and some whipped cream on top of everything. The spectacularly flavored drink is excellent for those who love both good coffee and good cognac.
